And the wind howled...

November 25, 2015
November 26th.

We have some incredibly severe weather down here in the Alpine regions of NSW.  Last night was no exception. Top of Thredbo recorded winds in excess of 120kmh.
I'm pretty sure it was the same here. It started with the moon sporting a fantastic rainbow so I went to grab my camera and tripod, as you do!  After a couple of shots the wind started to pick up and the rainbow was half gone. I took my gear inside and went back out to collect things that would probably get blown over and out across the fields... garbage bin, bbq, heavy timber outdoor chairs, buckets, pot plants etc etc... as I did this I could hear the most incredible roaring noise. I looked across to the mountains with a worried frown. It being a full moon it was as bright as day outside - thank goodness! The entry foyer is full of all sorts of bits and pieces.

As I sat inside and listened to the insane whistling, rattling and howling I heard sounds of something going kathunk! So out I went again. Now the wind was just roaring through. As I went around the front of the house I spotted the Weber BBQ lid - I managed to pick this up and then I was literally being blown metres along the path - trying to hold onto the damn lid!  Managing to stay upright I headed for the garage and opened the door to put things inside.  The big kathunk was the sound of the table that held loads of new potplants - including some incredibly heavy pots - being thrown down the drive - potplants totally thrown out of their comtainers.  So collected the table - try holding a large fold up table in gale force winds - brings a new meaning to windsurfing! During this time I was being sandblasted by grit and dirt - my eyes were full of it.
My biggest concern was the pile of skirting boards which had been covered wth Colourbond roof sheets which in turn were held down by large rocks!  The sheets were being lifted from one end - it would only be time before the rocks would be thrown off and the sheets would slam into the house - and those of you who know our house will know it is all windows and doors, double glazed at that!
The roof sheets on the house were rattling and shaking. Spook was beside himself, his ears pricked up and looking more and more concerned - looking to me for reassurance!

I finally went to bed around 2:45am and fell into an exhausted sleep. Spook hid under the bed!

This morning a neighbour was knocking on the door. She was driving to work and spotted a horse caught in the wire fence.  After walking down the road I spotted several neighbours all detangling the horse - not ours thank goodness! Our boys and girl were fine and had weathered the wind successfully.

It's really great having roof windows. They let the heat trapped under the ceiling out and allow air to circulate. Just one unexpected problem... birds!  Now, I knew that come the warmer weather there would be an issue with flies coming in as we don't have fly screens fitted (yet!).  Mosquitoes aren't a problem for the moment.  But birds!  Never thought of that one.
We have so many Welcome Swallows here.  They fly around, darting, dipping and diving at an amazing speed. Spook just loves to cha...

It's late spring, heading into summer. We've had some amazing storms and torrential rain and also a late frost that has turned the tiny new leaves on our trees to jelly!

It's 2015 and...

February 19, 2015
The storms we have had of late are crazy - just look at the clouds - pretty amazing..the resulting hailstorms have taken many by suprise!

Autumn is on its way! Yes, I've seen some oaks already showing scarlet leaves. Couldn't be possible I thought!  Couldn't be the lack of rain down this region, we have been soaking in it for quite some time. In fact, where was the incredibly shocking hot summer? Well, I guess, it's only a couple of weeks until March, the official beginning of autumn.

It was a ...

On Building a Shed

September 16, 2014

(August 25th)

The Shed

Finally we are building the shed! Slab was poured a while ago.  It is a daunting task. A 12x12m shed – can you imagine the span of the rafters? It’s all in steel too. A very good friend (not mentioning any names, Rob!!) has offered to come down and bring lots of tools and his engineering brain with him – could be interesting – two engineers from two different disciplines agreeing on what to do and how to do it!

We arrive at Sally Supreme – what? no water…...

First World Problems...

August 4, 2014
30 July, 2014
Well here we are at Sally Supreme and over the last few days there seem to have been an endless list of problems which has made the stay frustratingly uncomfortable.

For us 1st worlders access to water and power are just simply taken for granted.. right?

At Sally Supreme we have no power except what our blue Gennie supplies, no town water – our water supply is pumped up from the Grosses Plains creek below up to our very small tank and then gravity fed to Sally – there’s o...

The day the wild wild winds huffed and puffed...

July 2, 2014
Ferocious winds down in the Southern Alps region are not uncommon - but couldn't they have waited until the concrete had been poured???? really!

Our shed has been put off time and time again - finally last week the concreter came (from Cooma - I'd highly recommend him to Jindabynites...)  got everything in place on Saturday for a Monday early morning concrete pour.....arrghhhh!
It was called off because of the impending cold-front predicted (and it did arrive with a vengence) - if only they had...

Plastering complete - ready for sanding

July 2, 2014
Well, our gyprockers from Canberra have done a marvellous job. Unfortunately for us their final week and a bit has fallen smack bang in the middle of school holidays and a couple of dumps of much needed real snow!
I've found accommodation in various places - but of course the rates have all doubled and tripled because 'the snow has fallen'...! sheesh!
Thank goodness these guys are down to earth and are not really worried about where they lay their heads just so long as it's not under the stars ...

To Blog or not to Blog...

July 2, 2014
It's hard enough to keep up with software, apps, blogs, social media et al.   I started with this website software because it was not only free but allowed a multitude of  formatting options etc.  Of course, nothing is free!  As I progressed with this work-in-progress  I had to make a decision at some point to actually publish it.  Then of course I wanted my own domain name, that's not free. That being done you then have to find the time to actually keep it up to date and actually write somet...

Plastering has begun...yay!

Finally the house is taking shape inside. It's been a drama tring to find trades people in downtown Jindabyne and areas close by.  With the approaching opening of the ski season, actually, this weekend now... the lodges have been trying to get all their remodelling, renovating and new work finished. What that means is that this is the busiest time of year for all trades. As soon as that snow falls in earnest work up on the mountains will be done for the season. Then, of course, these workers will be taking some well deserved time off. None of this is of any use to us mere mortals...

We have finally found some gyprockers  in Canberra and they seem to be good workers and have many years experience.  We have our fingers crossed!

Today the temperatures plummeted - cloudy, cool - very cool and damp - must have been a few snowflakes up on the high peaks for sure.

We had some visitors - Rob & Sandra came for a drive with Bella and took a tour of the house and gave us a great reason to take time off - great guests who brought lunch and some great wine - thank you!

Back in the warmth of our home away from Sally Supreme we have the fire going, the doggies fed and can hopefully relax for a while in front of the tele (thank you Cathy & Angus!)

 Photos below...

1st row: the plumbers needed to flush out the drains and test their plumbing...so down to the dam to fill up the cube, Charles decided to wash the car too - at least he managed to clean off some of the mud on one side! lol.

Now there's a problem - flat tyre on the trailer when it's got a full load of water on board, lucky the hydraulic jack was in the garage :) (not so lucky for Justin when he had a flat tyre at home and Kk had to change it and found the jack was bu**ered!

The trench to the builder's outhouse?

2nd Row: No, it's not some alien worm... it's our alternate heating source for the bedrooms - hot air trapped in the apex of the mezannine is pumped into the bedroom below (hadn't been put in place in this pic)

3rd row: velux windows being put in and the finished front veranda roof  - even has my initial :)

4th & 5th rows: more veranda and velux window

6th row: Shed site  from the new velux window and our lovely rainwater tank before the downpipes were connected.
